Welcome Back to School! A Message from the Superintendent

As we prepare to embark upon a new school year, I would like to extend a heartfelt 'welcome' to all our students and their families and hope that everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable summer with friends and loved ones.  For our students returning to school, it is a time filled with anticipation and excitement as they prepare to reacquaint themselves with friends, to develop new friendships, and to enter the next grade level at their school.  For students new to New Westminster, or entering into school for the first time, the day after Labour Day is special time indeed.

This year will be particularly special for one group of our young students as nearly one-third of this year's Kindergarten students in New Westminster prepare to enter a full-day educational program.  We are extremely excited about Full Day Kindergarten in New Westminster as this program embarks upon the first of a two-year implementation cycle in elementary schools throughout British Columbia.  We are equally excited about the progress being made with respect to our three 'soon-to-be-built' schools here in New Westminster which will provide beautiful, state-of-the-art facilities for nearly half the student population of the school district. We encourage you to attend the information sessions scheduled during the month of September to learn more about the Neighbourhoods of Learning concept as it relates to our new schools.

Inevitably, the excitement and bustle of school opening in September will give way to more comfortable and established routines as we progress through the fall months and beyond.  During this time, and throughout the year, we will continue to maintain our strong focus on academic excellence that has come to distinguish the New Westminster School District over the years.  This is our core purpose as a caring and compassionate school district and it is reflected through the unwavering efforts of our excellent staff who work with our students and families every day of the year.

To all of our parents, students, staff and community members, "Welcome Back"!  We all have an important role to play in the success of our students and I look forward to working closely with you throughout the 2010-2011 School Year to ensure that this is an exciting, fulfilling, and rewarding year for all of our students.

Dr.  John Woudzia, Superintendent of Schools
