A Message from the Superintendent
Welcome to Summer! After one of the longest, coldest, and 'wettest' springs in recent memory, summer has finally arrived! As the end of the current school year approaches, our thoughts naturally begin to turn to warm, sunny, leisurely days filled with fun, laughter, recreation, and family vacations. In the field of public education, the much anticipated 'summer break' is also a time that allows us to pause and reflect upon the school year that has just concluded.
As in previous years, the 2011-12 school year was one that saw its share of challenges. However, this has also been a year of tremendous accomplishment and achievement. Our Aboriginal student graduation rate reached its highest level ever this year and was significantly above the provincial rate. The district expanded its highly successful Fast ForWord literacy program to a number of additional elementary schools and alternate programs, and implemented a new Professional Cooks apprenticeship program in partnership with Vancouver community College. The district was also successful in receiving official approval for its soon-to-be-built elementary and middle schools this past spring, and anticipates approval for the replacement secondary school this fall. As in previous years, many of our students continued to achieve recognition for their outstanding academic, scholarly, and artistic accomplishments at both provincial and national levels.
As we move into the summer season, with all its splendour and warmth, I'd like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our wonderful staff for all the outstanding work they do every day of the year in making New Westminster schools such positive and joyful places for our students to learn and grow. Words are insufficient to convey my appreciation for your tireless contributions toward improving the success and well-being of our students on a daily basis. To our parents, I'd like to offer my heartfelt gratitude for your outstanding support, encouragement, and partnership in helping to raise the educational experience in New Westminster to a level of excellence that is unparalleled in B.C. Your efforts are truly appreciated and your ongoing contributions are critical to our success.
On behalf of the entire Board of Education - to all of our amazing staff, students, and parents - please accept my best wishes for a safe, relaxing, well-deserved, and of course, 'fun-filled' summer break and we look forward to working with you again in the 2012-13 school year ahead.
