Letter from the Superintendent

As we prepare to embark upon a new school year, I'd like to offer a heartfelt 'Welcome' to all our students and families.  For our students returning to school, it is a time filled with anticipation and excitement as they prepare to reacquaint themselves with friends, develop new friendships, and enter the next grade level at their school.  For students new to New Westminster or entering school for the first time, the day after Labour Day is a very special time indeed.

'Flexibility' and 'Choice' have always been the hallmarks of the New Westminster School District.  We offer a myriad of outstanding educational opportunities and pathways such as Apprenticeship Training, Virtual School, Home Learners' Program, Secondary Alternate Education, French Immersion, Montessori, Full-day Kindergarten, International Baccalaureate Program, and the regular K-12 program, to name but a few.

We are also very excited about the progress being made with respect to our new elementary school on the former St. Mary's Hospital site and our third middle school to be built on the current John Robson school site.  Project agreements were formally approved for both schools last Spring, and we are anticipating Ministerial approval for our replacement secondary school sometime during the current school year.  When completed, these three schools will provide beautiful, state-of-the-art facilities for nearly half the student population of our school district.

Inevitably, the excitement and bustle of school opening in September will give way to more comfortable and established routines as we progress through the fall months and beyond.  During this time and throughout the year, we will continue to maintain our strong focus on academic excellence that has come to distinguish the New Westminster School District.  This is our core purpose as a caring and compassionate school district and it is reflected through the unwavering efforts of our excellent staff who work with our students and families every day of the year.

To all of our parents, students, staff and community members, 'Welcome Back!'  We all have an important role to play in the success of our students and I look forward to working closely with you throughout the 2012-2013 School Year to ensure that this is an exciting, fulfilling, and rewarding time for all of our students.

Sincerely,

Dr. John Woudzia, Superintendent of Schools
