New Westminster School District Behind Picket Lines on Monday, May 26, 2014
As you are probably aware, the BC Teachers' Federation (BCTF) and the BC Public School Employers' Association (BCPSEA) are negotiating a new contract and, stemming from these negotiations, the BCTF began job action at the end of April. This morning the BCTF announced that their job action will include rotating strikes across the Province. The rotating strikes will begin on Monday, May 26 and continue May 27, 28 and 29. All school districts will be impacted on one of those days. For the New Westminster School District, all schools will be behind picket lines on Monday, May 26th. We will advise parents of any new information as it becomes available.
Principals and Vice-Principals will be attendance at their respective schools during the strike next Monday. There will be picket lines at all schools and district buildings and we anticipate that teachers and support staff will honour these picket lines. There will not be any regular supervision or instructional programs available. With this in mind, I am asking parents to find alternate arrangements and not to send their children to school on Monday, May 26, 2014.
Your patience and understanding during this difficult time is truly appreciated. It is my hope that the labour dispute is resolved quickly and that a negotiated settlement can be reached so that students' education can return to normal. Please see the attached letter to parents from the Superintendent of Schools.
