Apprenticeship & Career Programs

Post Secondary Apprenticeship and Career Training Programs are available at: New Westminster Secondary School, 835 Eighth Street, New Westminster BC V3M 3S9.
A wide variety of opportunities currently exist for students to take post-secondary courses while still attending high school. These programs provide students with credits in a post secondary trade or training program and credits towards their high school graduation diploma.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS: ACE-IT (Accelerated Credit Enrollment in Trades)
Since 2007, School District No. 40 (New Westminster) has provided students at New Westminster Secondary School with apprenticeship opportunities through ACE-IT. These programs are offered both at New Westminster Secondary School, and at our partner Post Secondary Institutions. All students enrolled in District ACE-IT programs are required to also take the Secondary School Apprenticeship course. The following apprenticeship programs are currently available:
 
Carpentry program in partnership with BCIT
 
Piping (Plumbing) program in partnership with the Piping Industry Apprenticeship Board (PIAB)
 
Professional Cook training program in partnership with Vancouver Community College
Off Campus Programs provided by post secondary partners at their facilities
The District Apprenticeship Advisory Committee, who overseas the development and operation of District ACE-IT Programs, is also currently exploring other apprenticeship opportunities. Information will be posted when it is available.

PROGRAMS FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS
BCIT Digital Arts Program is 1 to 2 years in duration and often leads to a career as an animator or digital artist. Graduating NWSS students with marks of 60% or more in Photography and Photoshop 11 or 12 who also meet BCIT entrance requirements can gain provisional acceptance into the BCIT Digital Arts Program.
 
Douglas College Animal Health Technology program is 2 years in duration at the David Lam Campus, and often leads to a career as a Veterinarian Assistant. Graduating NWSS students who meet the college's requirements will be guaranteed an interview for admission to the Animal Health Technology Program.
 
Douglas College Dental Assisting Program is a 10 month program at the New Westminster Campus and often leads to a career helping dentists and patients. NWSS has an agreement in place whereby each year 1 or 2 graduating students are guaranteed acceptance into the program once they have met the college's requirements.
OTHER CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
 
The Youth Firefighter Program is a partnership between New Westminster Fire Services, Parks, Culture, and Recreation, the Justice Institute of BC and the School District. This program provides students in grades 11 and 12 with the opportunity to experience a condensed fire academy situation. The program includes: first aid, auto extrication, fire science, fire safety, and a trip to the Justice Institute in Maple Ridge to put out live fires at their training grounds. Ten successful applicants are selected each year. In 2012, the program will run from July 3 -7. Applications and Consent forms are now available.  Application Deadline is Friday April 27, 2012. Student Police Academy is a cooperative effort of the New Westminster Police Service and the Justice Institute of BC-Police Academy. The program provides grade 11 and 12 students with a realistic perspective on policing, The academy consists of approximately 80 hours of instruction. When completed, the hours may be applied towards students’ work experience activities for Education Portfolios for grades 11/12. Student Police Academy 2012 2012 Deadline is March 9th, 2012.
