Special Education
The Special Education Department focuses on supporting students designated in the high incidence and low incidence special education categories and our English as Second Language learners in collaboration with the School-based Teams, District staff and the parents.
The District staff (District Administrator of Student Services, District Resource Teachers, District Itinerant Team and the District School Psychologist) support the School-Based teams with:
- the assessment and identification and student needs;
- programming of students;
- on-going evaluation of student progress
The Special Education Department has three important goals:
- Awareness and understanding of the unique needs of special learners;
- The development and effective implementation of Individual Education Programs (IEPs); e.g. increased use of technology (Kurzwell, Boardmaker, Clicker 5); and,
- Differentiating instruction to address the needs of diverse learners.
A series of in-service opportunities are offered by Student Services each year for teaching and support staff.
For more information about Special Education, please contact the District Administrator for Student Services, Diane Halkett, by email or phone 604-517-6369.
