Universal Design for Learning
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides a solution and blueprint for creating flexible goals, methods, materials and assessments that accomodate learner differences. UDL involves designing units and lessons from the outset that have a place for ALL students to be active participants.
A universally-designed curriculum offers the following:
- multiple means of representation to give learners various ways of acquiring information and knowledge;
- multiple means of action and expression to provide learners alternatives for demonstrating what they know; and
- multiple means of engagement to tap into learners' interests, challenge them appropriately, and motivate them to learn.
In 2008, the Ministry of Education provided a grant to support a Universal Design for Learning Action Team project in the District. The purpose was to provide the opportunity for resource and classroom teachers to learn more about UDL as they worked together to implement the principles in their classrooms. A collaborative model has been structured where participants plan together and share successes and challenges with the guidance and support of more experienced UDL colleagues from neighbouring Districts.
The UDL Project is now in its second year with over 50 elementary, middle and secondary teachers participating and sharing resources.
